Teaching with videoTeaching students how to teach themselves
Doug Hood, USPGA Master Teaching Professional Doug Hood Golf School To start the year off with something completely different, Thailand Educators Network (TEN) invited Doug Hood to share his experience in using video to help students learn to play better golf. Doug Hood has been teaching golf for 30 years – over 40,000 lessons – and has been incorporating video into his lessons for over 15 years. Although he was initially sceptical, after experiencing the value of watching a video replay with the student watching side-by-side, and the ability to accomplish a before and after visual proof of improvements and the ‘Added Value’ of keeping a student progress library, today, Doug commented, “I'd be lost without the benefits video brings to my lessons.” The National Golf Foundation (NGF), the non-profit research organization for the golf industry in America reported that a two-year study showed that golfers who take instruction to learn the game, improve their technique three (3) times faster on average than golfers who try to learn on their own. In addition, golfers, who take instruction from teachers who utilize video, improve three (3) times faster on average than golfers who take instruction from teachers who do not use video motion analysis! Nowadays, there are many generated software-learning systems to choose from for teachers. Since starting to use video, Doug finds video feedback really helps his lessons become more valuable in assisting students to learn much faster, easier and more effectively through the power of visualization. After all, he added, “a teacher’s job is to teach students, how to teach themselves.” The system Doug likes to use is linked to a laptop, camcorder and printer making it ideal for golf teaching programs, seminar presentations, clinics and networking events. The software features include video capture, split screen synchronization, comparative modeling to a pro’s swing, time lapse video display, graphic drawing tools, audio voice over, a student library and the ability to deliver a lesson via CD, USB memory or email. During his presentation, Doug offered advice about how to ‘experiment with the use of video’ in the classroom as a springboard to creating more student interaction in learning and a way to create faster and more effective results in teaching. Doug Hood Doug Hood is a USPGA Master Teaching Professional with over 30 years of experience. He established the Doug Hood Golf School in 2002 at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Bangkok. The Doug Hood Golf School utilizes state of the art video motion analysis in assisting the students in learning to play golf. Doug’s students range from beginners to professional players! Services include private lesson packages, junior golfer training programs, holiday instruction programs, corporate clinics and guest speaking engagements. |
